Last church standing in Hillcrest is beacon of activism

Brooks AME Worship Center, the last remaining church in Corpus Christi’s historically Black and Hispanic Hillcrest neighborhood, functions both as a spiritual home and a central organizing hub against decades of industrial encroachment, including the proposed Inner Harbor desalination plant.

Rooted in the African Methodist Episcopal tradition of resisting discrimination, the church keeps its doors open for worship and community meetings, continuing a role it has played since its founding nearly 100 years ago.
